Understanding the difference between Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate

CBD: the ever-growing name in physical and mental health and wellness. Wherever you turn, you will see or hear about CBD and CBD oil and products and how you are able to incorporate them into your daily habits and lifestyle.

The truth is, however, that we are surrounded by so many different types of CBD, different CBD companies, and different CBD products that we are almost inundated.

There is an abundance of information relating to CBD and this, combined with the different types of CBD available, may be overwhelming and confusing.

Not all CBD products are created equal, and the common fear amongst people that CBD will make them experience a “high” feeling could deter them from the possible benefits of incorporating CBD products into their lives.

There is a very distinct difference between the chemical compound THC which makes a person “high,” and CBD.

We will go through the explanations of the different compounds, as well as the differences between Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD, and CBD Isolate.

Understanding these differences may help you understand and feel more confident about the possible incorporation of CBD products into your lifestyle.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The endocannabinoid system or ECS exists within the human body, whether or not you make use of cannabinoids or any compounds from the marijuana plant. Endocannabinoids are essentially molecules that are created by your body—these are similar chemical compounds to those found in the cannabis plant. *

These are responsible to maintaining important body functions and these bind to the endocannabinoid receptors that are located within the human body.

This is where it can get very technical, delving into the science of how cannabinoids and endocannabinoids work and how the cannabinoid receptors in your brain work.

What is CBD

Cannabis and hemp plants hold hundreds of chemical compounds, and of those CBD and THC are just two of the chemical compounds present. CBD or Cannabidiol is a commonly used compound from the marijuana plant that has been used for many years by human beings for numerous different reasons.

Cannabis sativa is the plant species of which marijuana and hemp plants belong to. Cannabis sativa has many different chemical compounds within the leaves, stems and seed. From fatty acids to terpenes, essential oils, CBD and THC to name only a few, the cannabis plant has many different potential benefits for human beings.

Hemp seed oil may provide wonderful moisturization benefits to both hair, skin, and nails and is often featured in beauty products such as moisturizers, shampoos and conditioners.

Hemp protein is an extract from the hemp plant and is used in plant-based and vegan protein powders and recipes.

CBD is extracted from the cannabis or hemp plant and created into CBD oils, CBD teas, CBD supplements, CBD gummies, CBD chocolates and more.

Hemp Plants vs. Marijuana Plants

Hemp plants are just another species of the Cannabis Sativa plant. Hemp plants are a form of cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3% THC. Any cannabis sativa plant that contains more than 0.3% THC is considered a marijuana plant.

The difference between CBD oil and Hemp Oil is that CBD oil is derived from the leaves and stems as well as the flowers of the cannabis plant and contains CBD as well as other chemical compounds.

Hemp oil, however, is derived from only the seeds of the plant.

Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD, but does contain healthy fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Hemp seed oil extracts are found in many common products such as skin or hair care products, and even clothing and textiles.

Plant based protein is also a popular extract from the hemp plant in the form of hemp protein powder and this also does not contain any THC.

What is THC?

THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is another chemical compound located in the cannabis plant. This compound is responsible for interacting with the receptors in the human brain and creating the ‘high’ that people typically associate with marijuana.

This psychoactive ingredient is what often deters people from using CBD products. However, hemp plants contain less than 0.3% THC and by understanding the different types of CBD oils and CBD products available – you will be able to ensure that you completely avoid THC if you wish.

Low levels of THC combined with CBD have been shown to shown to be potentially more effective when used for pain relief – so the science is still out there on the potential benefits of THC – and it shouldn’t be automatically considered as a ‘bad’ chemical compound.

The different types of CBD available

Full Spectrum CBD

Full Spectrum CBD contains many, if not all, of the plant extracts from the cannabis plant. These extracts can include essential oils, CBD, terpenes and may contain low levels of THC.

Terpenes are the chemical compounds found in plants that create the distinct smell of that particular plant – think lavender and even cannabis.

The maximum levels of THC that full-spectrum CBD oil may contain, according to FDA regulations, is 0.3% THC. ****

Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad Spectrum CBD typically should not contain any THC; however, trace elements may be found in the broad-spectrum CBD oil or products.

Broad spectrum CBD typically contains all of the chemical compounds found in cannabis plants, such as essential oils, terpenes and CBD so it’s like full spectrum CBD without the addition of the 0.3% THC levels.

CBD Isolate

CBD Isolate is the purest form of CBD available. CBD Isolate is usually derived from the seeds of the cannabis plant, called hemp.

CBD Isolate contains only the cannabinoid chemical compound from the hemp plant, and no traces of THC.

If you are a person who is concerned about consuming even the smallest amount of THC, then a CBD isolate or isolated CBD product would typically be more ideal, than a broad-spectrum CBD or full spectrum CBD products.

Different CBD types and their uses

Which type of CBD you choose – CBD Isolate, Broad Spectrum CBD or Full Spectrum CBD – all depends on the reason and the purpose for which are choosing to use CBD.

CBD Isolate may be a good option for first time users, or for people who are hesitant or concerned about any levels of THC in their CBD products.

Full Spectrum CBD may be a better option for people who are wanting to experience potential pain-relieving benefits from their full spectrum products.

Some studies* have shown that full spectrum CBD may be more effective for pain relief for example, due to the combination of low levels of THC and the CBD combined.

Broad spectrum CBD products may be considered the ‘middle ground’ between Full Spectrum CBD products and Isolate CBD.

If you have started out using isolate CBD and are ready to move on to broad spectrum CBD, which may be more effective for potential enhanced sleep benefits for example, then broad spectrum could be viewed as the ‘stepping stone’.

Once you have used broad spectrum products, you could move onto full spectrum products if you were looking for possible enhanced pain-relieving effects, as an example.

The truth is that some people do not feel the effects of the 0.3% THC levels in full spectrum CBD products.

It is a very individual trial and error experience and which products work better for you is highly dependent on individual needs and personal experience.
